Albufera Boat Ride & Paella Lunch
Overview
Just 11 km south of Valencia, the Albufera is a freshwater lagoon ringed by rice fields and reed beds, protected as a natural park and a Ramsar wetland for birds. Rice has been grown here since the 18th century, and it's the rice that goes into Valencia's paella.
The tour takes you out to the village of El Palmar, a fishing community since medieval times, where you board a traditional flat-bottomed wooden boat for a gentle ride across the lagoon. Herons, egrets and ducks feed along the reeds, and in the late afternoon the sun drops right into the water.
Back on land, sit down to a paella lunch in a local restaurant, cooked the Valencian way, and hear how the dish grew out of the rice fields around you.
