Overview

Toledo sits on a rocky hill wrapped by a loop of the Tagus, about an hour south of Madrid, and its old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For centuries Christians, Muslims and Jews lived side by side here, and the narrow streets still show it.

The tour starts with a stop at a viewpoint across the river for the classic panorama of the city, with the cathedral spire and the Alcázar on the skyline. You then walk the old town with a guide: the Gothic Cathedral of Saint Mary, the second biggest in Spain; the Santa María la Blanca synagogue, the oldest synagogue building still standing in Europe; the monastery of San Juan de los Reyes; and the Church of Santo Tomé, home to El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz.

You'll have free time for lunch and for Toledo's famous marzipan, which has its own protected geographical indication, before returning to Madrid.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a lot of walking?

Yes, Toledo is hilly with cobbled streets, so wear comfortable shoes. Some tours use public escalators to climb into the old town.

Yes. High-speed trains from Madrid take just under 30 minutes, but a guided tour saves you planning and explains the city's history.
