Overview

Swap the capital for the Pacific coast on a day trip to Chile's most colourful city. The drive west takes about an hour and a half, through the vineyards of the Casablanca Valley.

In Valparaíso, you explore the hills of Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, the heart of the historic quarter that UNESCO lists as World Heritage. Steep lanes are lined with painted houses and street art, and one of the city's century-old funiculars (ascensores) carries you between the port and the viewpoints. Many tours stop at La Sebastiana, the hillside house of poet Pablo Neruda (closed on Mondays and Tuesdays).

Next door, Viña del Mar is the seaside resort: wide avenues, gardens, the famous flower clock and a long beach promenade where you can stop for lunch or a walk before the drive back to Santiago.
