Orongo & Rano Kau Half-Day Tour, Rapa Nui
Overview
Rapa Nui's south-western tip is crowned by Rano Kau, a huge extinct volcano whose crater holds a reed-covered lake. On its rim, high above the ocean, stands Orongo, the stone village where the Birdman ceremony (Tangata Manu) was held.
Each year, young men raced down the cliffs and swam to the islet of Motu Nui to bring back the first sooty tern egg of the season; the winner's chief became the island's Birdman for a year. With an accredited local guide, you walk the marked path past the restored low stone houses and rock carvings of birdmen, with views of the islets and the crater.
Most tours also visit Ahu Vinapu, known for its finely fitted stonework. It's a perfect half day to add to the full-day tours, and a different side of Rapa Nui from the moai.
