Cajón del Maipo & El Yeso Reservoir Day Trip
Overview
The Andes are on Santiago's doorstep, and this day trip takes you right into them. You follow the Maipo River up the Cajón del Maipo, a deep canyon of mountain villages, vineyards and rocky peaks, before a gravel road climbs to the El Yeso reservoir at around 2,500 metres.
The reservoir is a sheet of turquoise water ringed by mountains, often with snow on the summits even in summer. Most tours stop for a picnic by the water, typically with cheese, snacks and a glass of Chilean wine, and there's time for a short walk and photos. On the way back, many stop in the village of San José de Maipo or at a local chocolate shop.
It's a long but easy day, with most of the time spent in the vehicle and at viewpoints. Bring layers: it can be cool and windy at altitude even when Santiago is hot.
