Uyuni Salt Flats 3-Day Guided Excursion
Overview
Three days on the Salar de Uyuni is the trip most people come to Bolivia for. At around 3,650 m and more than 10,000 km² across, it is the largest salt flat in the world, a white plain so flat that, after rain, it mirrors the sky.
Travelling by 4x4 with a guide, you start at the train cemetery outside Uyuni, where locomotives were left to rust when the mining trade collapsed, and the salt-workers' village of Colchani. Then you head out onto the salt itself, with time for the classic perspective photos, and climb Incahuasi Island, a rocky outcrop covered in giant cacti with views across the white.
The following days usually go further south, past volcanoes and high-altitude lagoons where flamingos feed, before you return to Uyuni. Nights are spent in simple lodges or salt hotels, and evenings are cold, so pack warm layers.
