La Paz City Walking Tour
Overview
The best way to understand La Paz is on foot, with a local guide who can explain what you're looking at. Walking tours usually start at Plaza San Pedro, opposite the city's famous prison.
From there you head through the Rodríguez market, where cholitas in bowler hats sell fruit, potatoes and cheese, to the Witches' Market, whose stalls are piled with herbs, remedies and offerings used in Aymara rituals. You'll see the Basílica de San Francisco, built in the 18th century with carvings that mix Catholic and Andean symbols, and finish around Plaza Murillo, the main square, with the Government Palace and the cathedral.
Along the way your guide covers the history, politics and everyday life of the world's highest seat of government. Go slowly: the streets are steep and you're at about 3,600 m.
