Tiwanaku & Puma Punku Full-Day Tour with Lunch
Overview
Long before the Incas, Tiwanaku was the capital of a culture whose influence spread across the southern Andes. Its ruins stand on the Altiplano at about 3,850 m, near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca, and are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
With a guide you walk the main complex: the Akapana pyramid, the Kalasasaya platform with its standing monoliths, the semi-subterranean temple with carved stone heads set in its walls, and the Gate of the Sun, cut from a single block of stone. The site museums hold ceramics and the large carved monoliths found here.
After lunch you visit Puma Punku, where blocks of andesite and sandstone were cut with sharp angles and H-shaped recesses so precise they still puzzle visitors today. The drive from La Paz crosses the open Altiplano, with the Cordillera Real on the horizon.
