Lake Titicaca Full-Day Tour with Cable Car & Totora Reed Boats
Overview
Lake Titicaca, at about 3,812 m, is the largest lake in South America and has been sacred to the Andean peoples for centuries. This day trip takes you from the city to its shores and out on the water in the most traditional way.
The day starts with a ride on Mi Teleférico, the La Paz cable car network, gliding up from the canyon to El Alto with the city spread out below. From there you drive across the Altiplano towards the Cordillera Real and the lake.
On the shore, Aymara families still build boats from totora, the reed that grows in the shallows; craftsmen from the Bolivian side of the lake helped Thor Heyerdahl build his reed boat Ra II. You'll learn how the boats are made and take a ride on a totora reed boat across the calm water, before heading back to La Paz.
