Overview

Climb into a Hindu temple inside a limestone hill. Batu Caves, on the northern edge of Kuala Lumpur, is the city's most famous sight after the Petronas Towers.

At the foot of the hill stands a golden statue of Lord Murugan, about 43 metres tall. Behind it, 272 steps painted in rainbow colours lead up to the Temple Cave, a vast cavern with shrines under a high ceiling of rock and a shaft of daylight pouring in from above. Long-tailed macaques watch the climb, so keep food and sunglasses out of reach.

Your guide explains the temples and the Thaipusam festival, when huge crowds of pilgrims climb the steps, and there's time to explore the smaller temples at the base before driving back to your hotel.
