Overview

Carriacou is Grenada's small sister island to the north, and a day there feels like stepping back a few decades. After a hotel pick-up you board the fast ferry in St George's for the crossing of about 90 minutes, with the Grenadines appearing on the horizon.

In Hillsborough, the island's little main town, a local guide takes you on a drive round the island: boat-building in Windward, viewpoints over the reefs and bays, and stories of the Big Drum music and boat-launching traditions that Carriacou still keeps.

The afternoon is for the sea. Lunch at Paradise Beach, then take a water taxi across to Sandy Island, a thin strip of white sand and palms surrounded by shallow, clear water, for a swim and a snorkel before the ferry back to Grenada.
