Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral Day Trip from Bogotá
Overview
Go underground into one of Colombia's most surprising sights. North of Bogotá, in the town of Zipaquirá, a church has been carved out of the tunnels of a working salt mine.
The drive takes a little over an hour across the green Sabana de Bogotá. Inside the mountain, you follow dim, softly lit tunnels past small chapels and crosses cut into the salt rock, down to a vast nave with a glowing cross at its altar. You spend around an hour and a half underground, with time to see the carvings and the light shows.
Back in daylight, there's time to stroll Zipaquirá's main square, lined with palms, colonial houses and its cathedral, before the drive back to your hotel in Bogotá.
