Melk, Hallstatt & Salzburg Day Trip from Vienna
Overview
See three of Austria's best-known sights in one guided day out of Vienna. The first stop is Melk, where the golden Benedictine abbey stands on a rock above the Danube at the head of the Wachau valley, a baroque landmark with a celebrated library.
The road then climbs into the Salzkammergut lake district to Hallstatt, a village of wooden houses and church spires squeezed between the mountains and the Hallstätter See, part of the Hallstatt–Dachstein UNESCO World Heritage landscape. You have free time to walk the lakeside and the market square.
The day ends in Salzburg, Mozart's birthplace, whose baroque Old Town lies beneath the Hohensalzburg fortress. Stroll Getreidegasse and the cathedral squares before the drive back to Vienna in the evening. Travellers who want to stay longer can usually leave the group in Salzburg and take the train back at their own cost.
