Overview

Hop across the border for a day in Hungary's capital, about two and a half hours down the Danube from Bratislava. A guide shows you the essentials, then leaves you free time to explore.

The neo-Gothic Hungarian Parliament, with its red dome and spires lining the Pest riverbank, is the city's great landmark. Nearby, the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial remembers the Jews shot there in 1944–45. Across the Chain Bridge, Buda Castle Hill holds the Royal Palace, Matthias Church and the white turrets of Fisherman's Bastion, with views back over the river to Pest.

The banks of the Danube and Buda Castle Quarter are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Use your free time for a coffee and cake in a grand café or a bowl of goulash before the drive back to Bratislava.
