Tijuca Rainforest Jeep Tour
Overview
Rio has a rainforest inside the city limits. The Tijuca Forest, which covers the mountains behind the beaches, was replanted by hand from the 1860s on old coffee plantations and is now a national park of Atlantic Forest, waterfalls and viewpoints.
You climb into the hills in an open-top jeep with a guide who knows where to look for coatis, marmosets and toucans. Stops usually include the Vista Chinesa, a pagoda-style pavilion with views over the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, Ipanema and Sugarloaf; the Cascatinha Taunay waterfall; and the little 19th-century Mayrink Chapel. There's time for a short walk on a forest trail.
Many tours finish at São Conrado beach, where hang-gliders and paragliders land after their flights from the peaks above. Pickup is in the morning, and you're back at your hotel in time for lunch.

Coatis and marmosets are often seen, and toucans sometimes. Sightings are never guaranteed in the wild.
Comfortable shoes for the short trail, insect repellent and a light rain jacket, as showers are common in the forest.
