Overview

The classic way to see Búzios is from the deck of an escuna, one of the wooden schooners that leave the town pier several times a day. Many of the peninsula's best beaches are tucked into coves that are easier to reach by sea, and this trip strings them together.

The boat sails past Ossos, Azeda and the small islands offshore, with stops of around half an hour for a swim. Typical stops are João Fernandes, Azeda or Tartaruga beach and Ilha Feia, where the water is clear enough to see fish from the boat; you can stay on board or swim ashore. The exact route depends on the wind and sea conditions on the day.

Bring a towel and sun cream. Snorkel masks can usually be hired on board, and drinks such as caipirinhas and snacks are sold as you sail.
