Gaucho Day at an Estancia
Overview
An hour or so out of the city, the flat green pampas begin, and a day at an estancia, a working cattle ranch, shows you the country life that shaped Argentina's sense of itself.
Most day trips go to Estancia Santa Susana near Los Cardales, about 80 km from Buenos Aires. You're welcomed with empanadas and a glass of wine, then have time to ride a horse or take a carriage around the grounds and look round the old house, now a small museum.
Lunch is the main event: a long asado of grilled meats with salads and wine, followed by folk music and dancing. In the afternoon the gauchos show their horsemanship, including the sortija, where riders at full gallop try to spear a small ring hanging from a bar.
