Colonia del Sacramento Day Trip to Uruguay
Overview
Across the wide, brown River Plate from Buenos Aires lies Colonia del Sacramento, a small Uruguayan town founded by the Portuguese in 1680. Its historic quarter is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a day there feels like a slower world.
The fast ferry crosses in about an hour and a quarter. On arrival, a guided walk takes you through the old town: the Calle de los Suspiros, a cobbled lane running down to the water; the old city gate and drawbridge; the lighthouse built over the ruins of a convent; and the leafy Plaza Mayor.
The afternoon is yours to climb the lighthouse, browse the small museums and craft shops, or sit over lunch looking out at the river before the ferry back.
