Overview

Most of St Kitts' mountainous interior is protected rainforest, and a guided walk is the best way to see it up close. The tour starts with a ride by open-sided 4x4 from the coast up into the hills, past cane-field ruins and the village of Old Road, where you stop to see rock carvings left by the island's first Kalinago (Carib) inhabitants.

From the Wingfield area, your guide leads you along forest trails into a deep valley of giant trees, with hanging roots, ferns and the sound of the stream below. Along the way you'll learn about medicinal plants and the fruit trees that grow wild here, and with luck you'll spot green vervet monkeys in the branches. Depending on the route and the weather, there may be a chance to cool off in the river.

The walking is moderate, on uneven and sometimes muddy paths, so you'll need a reasonable level of fitness. Groups are kept small.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be?

A moderate level of fitness. The trails are uneven and can be slippery after rain, with some short climbs.

What should I wear?

Closed walking shoes or trainers with good grip, light clothes you don't mind getting muddy, insect repellent, and swimwear if you'd like a river dip.

Will we definitely see monkeys?

Not definitely. Green vervet monkeys are common in the forest, but they're wild, so sightings aren't guaranteed.
