Monteverde Cloud Forest Night Walk
Overview
When night falls in Monteverde, a different cast comes out. On a guided night walk through a private cloud forest reserve near Santa Elena, a naturalist leads a small group along the trails by torchlight, looking for the animals that hide by day.
Guides know the burrows and branches to check. You may see a tarantula at the mouth of its hole, stick insects, glass frogs and tree frogs on the leaves, a sleeping toucan or motmot, and with luck a two-toed sloth, an olingo, an armadillo or a kinkajou moving through the trees. Every night is different, and the guide carries a torch and often a telescope to show you what they find.
Walks usually start around 5.30 or 6pm and last about two hours on easy, well-kept trails. Bring a torch, closed shoes and a light jacket: Monteverde is cool and often damp after dark.

Frequently asked questions
Sightings depend on the night, the weather and luck. Two-toed sloths are often seen, but no animal is guaranteed. Insects, spiders and frogs turn up on almost every walk.
Yes. The trails are easy and the walk is about two hours, so it suits most children who are happy to walk quietly in the dark.
