Arenal Hanging Bridges Guided Walk
Overview
On the slopes facing Arenal Volcano, a private rainforest reserve has strung a trail of bridges through the forest, some fixed and six of them hanging high in the canopy. The longest span runs close to 100 metres, and on a clear day one of them frames the volcano behind the treetops.
With a naturalist guide, the loop of around 3 kilometres turns into a wildlife walk. Guides carry a telescope and know where to look: a sloth folded in a cecropia tree, a toucan or an oropendola nest, a tiny poison dart frog on a root, a viper coiled on a branch. From the bridges you see the forest from the level of the birds, and lower down the trail passes a waterfall.
The walk is easy to moderate, on paved and gravel paths with some steps. Early-morning tours are best for birds; afternoon tours can be combined with an evening at the hot springs.

Frequently asked questions
The bridges are wide, solid steel structures with high sides, and most people who are nervous of heights manage fine. They move slightly as you walk. You can take it slowly; the guide stops often to look at wildlife.
Comfortable shoes with grip, a light rain jacket, insect repellent and water. A camera with a zoom helps, and the guide can usually help you take photos through the telescope.
