Everest Base Camp Trek
Overview
Follow the classic trail through Nepal's Khumbu region to the foot of the world's highest mountain. The route links Sherpa villages, Buddhist monasteries, forests of pine and rhododendron, glacial valleys and some of the Himalayas' best-known peaks: Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam and Thamserku.
After a short flight to Lukla, you walk up the Dudh Koshi valley and across high suspension bridges into Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You spend two nights in Namche Bazaar, the main Sherpa town, and two in Dingboche, so your body can adjust to the altitude. You pass the monastery at Tengboche, reach Everest Base Camp at about 5,360 metres and climb Kala Patthar, at about 5,545 metres, for wide views of the range.
This is a moderate-to-strenuous trek, with 13 days on the trail and up to 8½ hours of walking on the base camp day. You sleep in lodges and tea houses on the trail and in a hotel in Kathmandu, and a free day in Kathmandu covers possible delays to Lukla flights. Tell us your dates and we'll prepare your quote.

Frequently asked questions
This trek is graded moderate to strenuous. Walking days run from about 2½ hours to 8½ hours, at high altitude, so you should be a regular hill walker in good health. Talk to your GP before you book.
The route reaches about 5,545 metres, and altitude sickness can affect anyone, whatever their fitness. The itinerary builds in acclimatisation days in Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. Follow your trek leader's guidance on pace, rest and fluids, and tell them at once if you feel unwell: the treatment is to descend.
Your policy must cover trekking at the altitudes on this route, plus mountain rescue and helicopter evacuation. Medical care in the mountains is limited, and evacuation is very expensive without cover.
In the busy seasons, Lukla flights leave from Manthali in Ramechhap, a drive from Kathmandu. Mountain weather often delays them, so day 15 is kept free in Kathmandu as a contingency day.
In lodges and tea houses along the trail, which are simple and get more basic as you climb. You stay in a hotel in Kathmandu.
