Paracas & Ballestas Islands Day Trip from Lima
Overview
South of Lima, the desert meets the Pacific at Paracas, and a few kilometres offshore the rocky Ballestas Islands are crowded with wildlife. It's a long day out, but the easiest way to see Peru's coast and its sea life from the capital.
You leave Lima early and drive south along the Pan-American Highway to Paracas. From the El Chaco pier a speedboat takes you out to the islands, passing the Candelabra, a giant geoglyph carved into the sandy hillside whose origins are still a mystery. Around the islands, sea lions bask and bark on the rocks, and the cliffs are packed with Peruvian boobies, pelicans, cormorants and, with luck, Humboldt penguins. Boats circle the islands; landing isn't allowed.
Back on shore there's time for lunch by the sea in Paracas, and many tours add a drive through the red cliffs and beaches of the Paracas National Reserve before the return to Lima in the evening.

The boat ride lasts around two hours and the sea can be choppy. Bring a jacket and a hat, and take seasickness tablets if you need them.
