Moray & Maras Salt Pans Half-Day Tour
Overview
Two of the strangest sights in the Sacred Valley sit close together on the high plain above Urubamba, and this half-day tour pairs them. It makes a good extra after the Sacred Valley visit, or an easy outing on a free day in Cusco.
At Moray, the Incas shaped natural hollows into rings of terraces stepping down like an amphitheatre. Archaeologists think the site was used to breed varieties of maize. A few kilometres away, the salt pans of Maras spill down a hillside: thousands of small pools, fed by a salty spring, that local families still work by hand, as they have for centuries. You can walk along the edge of the pans and buy pink salt at the stalls.
Many tours stop at Chinchero on the way, a weaving village, to see how alpaca wool is spun and dyed with natural colours.

Frequently asked questions
No. Sacred Valley tours usually focus on Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Moray and Maras are on the plain above the valley and are visited separately.
Not much: short walks on uneven paths at each site. Wear comfortable shoes and bring sun protection.
