Osaka Street Food Tour: Dotonbori & Shinsekai
Overview
Osaka calls itself the nation's kitchen, and its motto is kuidaore: eat until you drop. On this evening food walk a local guide takes you to the places Osakans love, starting in retro Shinsekai beneath the Tsutenkaku tower, where kushikatsu skewers are dipped in a shared sauce pot (never twice).
After dark you move on to Dotonbori, the canal-side strip of giant neon signs, mechanical crabs and the famous Glico running man. Here you try takoyaki octopus balls straight from the griddle and okonomiyaki, the savoury cabbage pancake cooked at your table, with a stop at the moss-covered Hozenji temple tucked between the bars.
Osaka is 15 minutes from Kyoto by shinkansen, so it's an easy evening out on your JR Pass.
