Nara Half-Day Tour from Kyoto
Overview
Nara was Japan's capital in the 8th century, and its temples are among the oldest and grandest in the country. Under an hour from Kyoto, it makes an easy, rewarding half day.
In Nara Park, hundreds of sika deer wander freely; they're considered sacred messengers and some have learnt to bow for a deer cracker. You walk through the towering Nandaimon gate, guarded by two giant wooden kings, to Todai-ji, whose Great Buddha Hall shelters a bronze Buddha around 15 metres tall. Then follow the stone-lantern paths through the forest to the vermilion Kasuga Taisha shrine.
Tours travel by train or coach with a guide, and there's plenty of walking, so wear comfortable shoes. Mornings are the best time to see the deer before the crowds arrive.
