Overview

Swap skyscrapers for green mountains on Lantau, Hong Kong's largest island. The Ngong Ping 360 cable car glides about 25 minutes from Tung Chung over the bay and wooded ridges, with the airport runways below, up to the Ngong Ping plateau.

There, 268 steps lead up to the Tian Tan Buddha, a giant bronze seated Buddha looking out over the hills, and Po Lin Monastery, with its incense-filled halls and simple vegetarian kitchen. Then the tour heads down to Tai O, a fishing village of stilt houses over tidal creeks, dried-seafood stalls and shrimp-paste makers, where a short boat ride may take you out to look for pink dolphins.

Inclusions vary: some tours include the cable car and Tai O boat, others use coach or bus between sights. Allow a full day.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cable car suitable if I'm nervous of heights?

It's enclosed and smooth, but it's high above the water; buses also run up to Ngong Ping from Tung Chung.

Does it run in bad weather?

The cable car can stop in high winds or storms, and tours adapt to bus transfers if so.
