Overview

Camino Bulgaria is one of Europe's newest pilgrimage routes, opened in June 2026 and walked in the spirit of the Camino de Santiago, the Rota Vicentina and the Via Francigena. Its 81 km lead from Malko Tarnovo, deep in the Strandzha mountains, through the oak and beech forests of Strandzha Nature Park, Bulgaria's largest protected area, past old chapels, springs and small villages, to the sandy shore of the Black Sea. It ends in Sozopol at the Church of St Cyril and St Methodius, where relics of St John the Baptist are kept. They were found in 2010 on St Ivan Island, just off the town.

You start with a night in Burgas and a self-guided walk around the city that opens your pilgrim passport. A transfer takes you to Malko Tarnovo, and from there you walk four stages, between 11 and 24 km a day: ford the Veleka river, pass the Twelve Springs of the Strumnitsa, cross the old border between the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia, visit the Thracian sanctuary of Beglik Tash, and finish along the beaches of Arkutino into Sozopol. A mountain guide walks with you, your luggage goes ahead each day, and you sleep in village guest houses and small hotels.

In Sozopol you receive your official certificate, and day 7 is yours: a seasonal boat trip to St Ivan Island, the beach, or simply time to take it all in. Flights are not included, so you can fly to Burgas from the airport that suits you.

Your journey

1
Arrive in Burgas
Land at Burgas Airport and transfer into the city, where you stay in a 4★ hotel. The rest of the day is free. Burgas is the gateway to Bulgaria's southern coast and the Strandzha mountains, and its Sea Garden, a long seafront park, is the place for an evening stroll.
2
Burgas to Malko Tarnovo
After breakfast, set off on "Believe in Burgas", a self-guided mini cultural tour that is the symbolic start of the pilgrimage. It begins at the Tourist Information Centre, where you can collect the first stamp in your pilgrim passport. Then transfer to Malko Tarnovo, the official starting point of the route, and settle into your guest house. From here, the route's white and yellow three-stripe waymarks guide you past its 15 sites.
3
Malko Tarnovo to Zabernovo (23.5 km)
Breakfast, a packed lunch, and the pilgrimage begins. From the centre of Malko Tarnovo the trail crosses mixed terrain with gentle climbs and descents. A short detour leads to the Dokuzak Waterfall (2 km, about 40 minutes), then a long descent brings you to the Veleka river, which you cross at a shallow ford. The second half is a long, gradual climb to the village of Zabernovo. Your luggage is waiting at the guest house, and dinner tonight comes with a glass of wine or a soft drink.
4
Zabernovo to Pismenovo (23.5 km)
After breakfast, with a packed lunch in your bag, walk through an old oak forest. A short descent takes you across the Leskata river to a small meadow, from where you can visit the rock formation of the Twelve Springs of the Strumnitsa. The path follows the curves of the river, and after a short climb a wide view opens before the next village. The route then turns east and joins the old road into Pismenovo, where you stay in a hotel with dinner.
5
Pismenovo to Primorsko (11 km) and Beglik Tash
After breakfast, a shorter stage follows the Pismenovo–Primorsko road. After about 3 km you reach a bridge where the old border once divided the Principality of Bulgaria from Eastern Rumelia. The route comes out at Primorsko's South Beach, crosses the Dyavolska river and reaches the town centre. Later, an included cultural trip takes you to Beglik Tash, a Thracian rock sanctuary in the woods north of town. Overnight in a hotel in Primorsko.
6
Primorsko to Sozopol via Arkutino (24 km)
The final walking stage. Follow the road along Primorsko's North Beach, with Beglik Tash and the mouth of the Ropotamo river a short detour to the north. The route turns west towards the Ropotamo nature reserve, continues to Arkutino and runs the length of a long sandy beach known as Driver's Beach. A forest path brings you back to the road and on into Sozopol, where the Camino ends at the Church of St Cyril and St Methodius and the relics of St John the Baptist. Overnight in a hotel in Sozopol.
7
A day in Sozopol
A free day. A boat trip to St Ivan Island, where the relics of St John the Baptist were found, is a fitting last step of the pilgrimage; it is optional, seasonal and at extra cost, and we can check boat availability for you. Or spend the day on the beach, explore the Old Town, and take time to reflect on the journey.
8
Departure
Transfer from Sozopol to Burgas Airport for your flight home.
