Gaya Island Resort

Overview
Gaya Island Resort is on Malohom Bay, on Gaya Island in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park, a short speedboat ride from the resort's lounge at Jesselton Point in Kota Kinabalu. There are no cars: 120 timber villas sit on the forested hillside and along the mangroves, linked by walkways.
The Kinabalu Villas are set high on the hill, with a veranda for sunrise over the South China Sea and, on a clear day, Mount Kinabalu on the horizon. Inside, expect warm wood, a king-size bed and a large bathroom.
Days are as busy or as lazy as you like: the infinity pool by the bay, sea kayaking, snorkelling and PADI diving, guided rainforest walks and yoga. Spa Village Gaya Island sits among the mangroves. The resort runs a Marine Centre on nearby Tavajun Bay that cares for injured sea turtles and replants coral, and you can visit it. For dinner, choose between Feast Village, Fisherman's Cove, Chapman's Bar and the resort's other restaurants.
