Overview

Phuket is more than its beaches, and this half-day drive around the south of the island shows you the rest in one easy outing. Your guide picks you up at your hotel and follows the coast road to Karon Viewpoint, where three bays, Kata Noi, Kata and Karon, curve one after the other below the hill.

Next comes Wat Chalong, Phuket's largest and most visited temple, with its gilded halls and the tall Grand Pagoda said to hold a relic of the Buddha. When the site is open to visitors, the tour also climbs Nakkerd Hill to the Big Buddha, a 45-metre white marble statue looking out over Chalong Bay.

The tour ends in Phuket Old Town, where you walk streets of colourful Sino-Portuguese shophouses, small cafés and street art left by the island's tin-mining era. Bring comfortable shoes and clothing that covers shoulders and knees for the temples.
