Beijing Hutong Rickshaw Tour: Shichahai and the Drum Tower
Overview
The hutongs are the narrow lanes of grey courtyard houses that once covered most of old Beijing. Some of the best preserved run around the Shichahai lakes, just north of the Forbidden City, and the easiest way to see them is from the seat of a pedal rickshaw.
Your guide meets you near the lakes and your driver pedals you through the lanes, past carved doorways, local shops and old men playing cards. You stop near the Drum and Bell Towers, the old timekeepers of the city, and walk along the shore of Houhai lake, lined with willows. A highlight of most tours is a visit to a family in their courtyard home (siheyuan), where you see how people still live in the hutongs and often stop for tea or a snack.
It's an easy half day, good for all ages, and a gentle change of pace after the big sights. Morning and afternoon departures are usually available.

A narrow lane lined with traditional single-storey courtyard houses. Many were cleared as Beijing grew, but the area around Shichahai still has some of the best preserved.
